Pink eye is also sometimes called conjunctivitis. It can be either bacterial or viral and is often highly contagious. If you suspect pink eye, you want to get treatment as soon as you can. If you don’t know you have pink eye, or you don’t go to the doctor in order to get treatment, what happens? Pink eye is not something you want to mess with. Here are a few things that can go wrong if you ignore the signs and symptoms:

Pink Eye Spreads

When you have pink eye, whether you know it or not, you are often highly contagious. You’d think that when you have something wrong with your eye, it wouldn’t be easy to give it to someone else. After all, not many people come into contact with your eye, right? But you can touch your eye and then touch a household surface and that could infect someone else in your house who touches that surface later. Whether you know you have pink eye or not, if you are having eye issues, it is good to practice good hygiene with frequent hand washing. Not all pink eye is infectious, but you can never be too careful.

Cornea Damage

When you have pink eye, you can damage your cornea if it isn’t treated and it spreads. That may be rare, but it is possible and something you want to avoid. When your cornea is damaged, it can impair your vision on a permanent basis. Pink eye is a serious condition that can become even more serious if you ignore it. You definitely don’t want permanent scarring, blurred vision or the pain that comes with pink eye when it is ignored.

Signs Of Pink Eye

If you are concerned about pink eye and permanent damage, the best thing you can do is recognize the signs that you might have it and visit a doctor for a diagnosis. Pink eye often comes with eye pain or a burning sensation. Your eyes may be swollen and itchy as well. There will be redness around your eye and, of course, your eye will have a pink tinge. You will also possibly notice an oozing from your eye. If you see any of these signs and symptoms, it’s time to call the doctor in order to figure out what’s going on and prevent larger issues from occurring.
